Since the 1740s, the land has been in agricultural use. Dating to the early 1850s, the current main house replaced an earlier structure in approximately the same location. Other buildings on the property include the Cabins, the Kitchen House, the Gin House and the Dairy, which were all built at various times. The expanse of fields, ancient trees, historical structures, the link to Wappoo Creek for transportation, and the allee, uniquely combine to convey the work, agricultural life, and nature of plantations no longer present on the sea islands, yet which influenced us all.
